The word custom is used often in bridal fashion—but not every custom wedding dress is actually designed from scratch.

Some bridal companies offer customization, allowing a bride to begin with an existing gown and change selected details.

A true custom gown begins very differently.

Customization begins with a dress. Custom design begins with an idea.

What Is a Customized Wedding Dress?

A customized gown typically begins with an existing style, pattern or silhouette from a designer’s collection.

A bride may be able to change the neckline, add sleeves, alter the train, select another lace or combine elements from existing styles.

For a bride who already loves the original gown, this can be a wonderful option.

But the foundation of the dress already exists.

What Does Designing a Wedding Dress From Scratch Really Mean?

In an atelier, there is no existing dress waiting to be modified.

The process begins with you—your measurements, proportions, personal style and vision.

At SuZann Designs, the process starts with conversation and sketching. Detailed measurements are taken, fabrics and laces are sourced specifically for the design, and then a custom pattern is developed to turn the sketch into a three-dimensional garment.

Before the Wedding Fabric Comes the Toile

Before cutting the final silk, satin or lace, a toile, also called a muslin, may be created.

This test garment allows us to evaluate the neckline, waist placement, corset shape, skirt proportions and overall fit before cutting into the actual fabric.

The toile is pinned, marked and adjusted, and those changes are transferred back to the pattern.

This process reflects the tradition of the great Paris couture houses, where designs moved from sketch to pattern, toile, fittings and finally the finished garment through the hands of skilled atelier craftspeople.

Then the Gown Begins to Take Shape

Once the fit and proportions are established, the gown is cut in its final fabrics.

Lace placement is considered. Corsetry and internal structure are constructed. Seams are shaped and refined.

Then come the fittings.

A true custom gown usually requires multiple fittings throughout the construction process because the final fabrics and structure can behave very differently from the toile.

Each fitting allows the gown to be refined as it evolves.

Which Option Is Right for You?

If you already love an existing gown but wish the neckline or sleeves were different, customization may be exactly what you need.

But if you find yourself saying:

I love the bodice of this dress, the skirt of another, this particular lace—but I can’t find the dress I’m imagining anywhere...

You may not be looking for a modified wedding dress.

You may be looking for an atelier.
